Accessibility under the BFSG
Make your website accessible before it gets expensive.
Since 28 June 2025, online shops and booking sites in Germany must be accessible under the German Accessibility Act (BFSG). I audit your website, write the mandatory accessibility statement and fix the issues directly in the code.
- 28.06.2025The BFSG is in force, the transition period for websites is over
- WCAG 2.1 AAThe standard I test every page against
Does the BFSG apply to your website?
Very likely, as soon as consumers can buy, book or sign a contract with you online.
Online shops
Any site with a cart and checkout, whatever the shop system.
Bookings and appointments
Hotels, campsites, courses, studios and service providers with online booking.
Contracts online
Subscriptions, memberships, tickets and vouchers bought directly online.
Violations can lead market surveillance authorities to order fixes and impose fines of up to €100,000. On top of that come legal warnings (Abmahnungen), some of which are disputed.
Exempt are micro-enterprises with fewer than 10 employees and an annual turnover of no more than €2 million, insofar as they provide services. This is not legal advice.
Accessibility and SEO want the same thing.
Screen readers and search engines read your site in a similar way: as code, not as an image. What helps blind people therefore often helps Google too.
Images
Accessibility · WCAG 1.1.1
Screen readers read out the alt text
Blind people only learn what a product image shows through its alt text. Without it, they just hear “image”.
SEO
Google understands your images
Alt text helps search engines classify images and makes them findable in image search.
Headings
Accessibility · WCAG 1.3.1
An outline to jump through
Screen reader users jump from heading to heading. If the order is wrong, they lose their way.
SEO
Clear topics for search engines
A logical structure shows Google what the page is about and what matters.
Keyboard and code
Accessibility · WCAG 2.1.1
Everything works without a mouse
Menus, cart and checkout must be reachable and usable with the Tab key.
SEO
Real links instead of script tricks
Clean links and buttons are readable for crawlers. Lean code also loads faster.
Forms
Accessibility · WCAG 3.3.2
Every field labelled
Labelled fields and clear error messages make ordering and booking possible for everyone.
SEO
Fewer checkout drop-offs
A form everyone understands loses fewer customers at the last step.
